In July, two of Local 434's presidents represented our members at the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Convention in Washington, D.C. The convention brought together thousands of educators and union leaders from across the country to shape the future of our union through democratic action, professional collaboration, and shared advocacy for public education.

Teachers' Council President Ashley Mims reflected on her experience:

"One of the most powerful parts of attending was witnessing democracy in action. Seeing thousands of educators and union members come together to debate, discuss, and vote on the resolutions that will guide the AFT's work was a powerful reminder of what our collective voice can accomplish.

Watching Robert's Rules of Order unfold in a room of nearly 3,000 delegates was an experience in itself. Every motion, amendment, debate, and vote reflected a process designed to ensure members have a voice in the decisions that shape our union.

Beyond the official business of the convention, one of the greatest highlights was connecting with fellow unionists from across Illinois and throughout the nation. Hearing their stories, sharing ideas, and learning about the work being done to support educators, students, and public education in communities across the country was both inspiring and energizing.

I returned home reminded that Local 434 is part of something much larger than ourselves. Every conversation, every connection, and every shared experience strengthens the work we do on behalf of our members and our students each day."

We are proud to have Local 434 represented at the national level and grateful for the opportunity to bring back new ideas, renewed energy, and a deeper understanding of the issues facing educators across the country. Experiences like these strengthen our local union and reinforce the importance of standing together in support of public education.
