I have been serving as the West building rep for the last three years. I have been in District 201 for 26 years. I teach math, most recently Algebra 2 Advanced and Intro Algebra 3-4. My wife is Physical Education teacher Sally Stephens. I have coached football for the 26 years I have been in the district. I am also the faculty trainer for Synergy and on the NHS Faculty Board.
When I was a young teacher, about eight to ten years into my career, I had an experience that needed assistance from the union. There was a situation with a student in the hall. I confronted the student, it escalated a bit, and then I just got his name from another teacher. I was called into a meeting regarding the situation by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Principal. I didn't know why I was being called in, and I was nervous. I contacted my building rep and he went into the meeting with me. It turned out that I was being accused of ripping the ID off the student and injuring his neck. After an explanation, the situation was resolved and nothing else came of the matter. I know that having my building rep next to me enabled me to get through a very difficult situation. That is why I choose to step up and tackle this position. I want to be there when someone needs the same support. |
