My name is Karen Chism, and I’ve been a dedicated Para Professional since August 2017. My professional journey has given me the privilege of working with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. In my role as Youth Chair for USA Track and Field, I gained valuable experience collaborating with individuals across various agendas and understandings. These experiences have shaped my ability to adapt, learn, and grow through every interaction—both within District 201 and beyond.
Although I have not held a formal leadership role within our union, I was honored to serve as a member of the Contract Negotiation Committee. In this capacity, I acted as a trusted listener, liaison, and communicator for any member seeking guidance or support. I remain committed to addressing questions and concerns with respect and sensitivity, ensuring boundaries are upheld while fostering understanding. My desire to represent East membership stems from my passion for uplifting others. I believe that access to accurate information empowers us to make informed decisions that benefit not only ourselves but also our families and communities. One of my core values is ensuring that no one feels excluded—I vividly recall feeling lost within a system designed to protect me. It was through active involvement and learning how processes operate on our behalf that I gained confidence and felt empowered in my role. I am eager to share this knowledge and experience with others. Since 2017, I have consistently worked to inform, educate, and relay information across the chain of command. I am approachable, communicative, and deeply committed to keeping lines of dialogue open. My focus remains on ensuring that all members feel represented, heard, and valued. |
